Is there any treatment?
Treatment for Type I diabetes continues to consist of insulin injections.
Type 2 requires medication and some insulin injections.

If, in the event of a hypoglycemic attack, (low sugar levels) you should have a glass of milk and some biscuits. Normally a problem stems when somebody thinks because their blood sugar levels are low they must cram their bodies with sugar. However, when the body intakes a lot of sugar, in non-diabetics, the pancreas automatically produces surplus of the hormone insulin. Insulin takes the blood sugar levels back down which brings you back to where you started!

What research is being done?
Because many people aren't too keen on needles, research is ongoing. However the problem lies in your mouth! Insulin (which is the natural hormone to break down sugar) does not have a very high constitution and therefore breaks down very easily in the saliva. This makes it highly unlikely that sufficient insulin will get into the blood stream. Therefore researchers are currently learning about other strategies. The most popular ones being a new nasal spray and skin patches.
