What research is being done?
There are various different researches being carried out but scientist are still far away from developing any form of cure. The most promising researches are:
I. It has been found that PSP patients have a variation in the genes of the protein that clumps called tau. This genetic variant is believed to cause excessive production of the protein to a critical level.
2. It is believed that diet may be a factor. Certain tropical fruits from the FrenchCaribbean island of Guadeloupe have been linked with PSP-like cases on the island and investigations are underway to determine whether similar chemicals contained in the fruits are the source of the problem.
3. Mice and fruit flies have been used as animal "models". Those with an abnormal tau gene develop similar symptoms to those people with PSP. These animals are useful in understanding the development of brain cell loss and also developing new treatments.
